ArcelorMittal (formerly Mittal Steel) has worked with csrnetwork since 2006 to coordinate and develop its Corporate Social Responsibility Programme.

Initially, we conducted a series of benchmarking tasks to assess the strengths and weaknesses of Mittal Steel globally and regionally. To achieve this, we developed a combined benchmarking programme of external benchmarking against peers, customers and strong CSR practitioners, as well as an internal benchmarking process using our Reality Check tool. The Reality Check assesses CSR or sustainability programmes based on seven process elements such as auditing, management systems, policies, communication and so on.

Following the merger with Arcelor, Mittal has extended benchmarking in 2007 to include a comparative assessment of the Arcelor operations in relation to the Mittal operations that were benchmarked in 2006. The result will be a set of discrete and practical steps towards improving regional CSR programmes in order to drive a more consistent approach to CSR throughout the company.

At the same time, we have worked with ArcelorMittal's headquarters to develop global strategy, policies and standards to assist the regions in CSR implementation.
